Location OverviewAnkara is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city after Istanbul. With a population of approximately 4.5 million, it is an important commercial and industrial city. It is also the center of the Turkish Government, and houses all foreign embassies. It is an important crossroads of trade, strategically located at the center of Turkey's highway and railway networks and serves as the marketing center for the surrounding agricultural area. This unique combination makes for a great university location. The campus area is 4500 hectares and the forest area is 3043 hectares, including Lake Eymir, which is about 20 kilometers from the centrum of Ankara. The lake is available to METU students for rowing, fishing, picnicking and general recreational activities. Bus service is provided from the METU main campus and locations in the city to the lake. For shopping and banking convenience, there is an on-campus shopping center as well as multiple branches of various banks at the center of campus.
Program DescriptionStudents may enroll at METU for one semester or a full year with all regular courses taught in English. The research and education conducted by the university has an emphasis on engineering and natural sciences, however many courses in letters and humanities can also be found. METU has 40 undergraduate programs within 5 faculties. Currently, the university serves approximately 25,000 students 1,700 of whom are international from 85 different countries. The main part of the campus has dormitory capacity of approximately 6000 students who benefit from a shopping area, banks, post office and many eating places. Also a wide variety of sports facilities, including gymnasiums, tennis courts, basketball and football fields, jogging trails, olympic-size indoor swimming pool, and an outdoor swimming pool are available on METU campus. Among off campus facilities, METU has lodges at Elmadag, 30 kilometers from the METU campus, and a resort at Uludag near Bursa where mountain climbing and various skiing activities are possible. Throughout the academic year, students can enjoy art exhibitions, concerts, recitals, cinema and theater events as well as a variety of social and academic activities. The Cultural and Convention Center hosts many of these events and many more. One of the most favored social activities is the traditional International Spring Festival held in May.
Academic OverviewAll major course fields are offered in a variety of faculties on campus and all courses are taught in English. While no Turkish language skills are required to participate, Turkish language classes at two different levels--beginning and intermediate-are offered. We strongly encourage students to participate in these languages classes as it aids in both cultural adaptation and ability to function "on the street."
Grades received on reciprocal exchange study abroad programs through the University of Oklahoma are posted by the Office of Admissions as Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) on the OU permanent record. These grades are not factored into the participant's Grade Point Average. Because each student is enrolled in 12 credits per semester while abroad, participants are expected to enroll in an equivalent number of credits at the host university. Academic systems around the world vary in what equals 12 OU credits. The decision about awarding credits is made in the Office of Admissions at OU.
Program RequirementsYou must have a 2.5 Combined Retained GPA, be in good academic standing, have a valid passport and obtain a Turkish "Education Visa" in order to legally study abroad in Turkey. It is strongly advised that international students apply for their student visas at least 8 weeks in advance of their departures for Turkey. This destination requires both independence and maturity given the size, location and nature of the city of Ankara. You are responsible for researching information and understanding issues that relate to the safety, health, legal, environmental, political, cultural and religious conditions in your host country. The pre-departure material provided to you on your OU online study abroad application is only one component of your research. Our advice is to read, read, and read as much as possible about your host country. This is a learning process. Learn from past travelers. Buy maps and informational books. The more you know, the more you will get from your experience.
HousingThere are 18 modern dormitories within the university campus equipped with computer labs, internet connections, wired telephone service, study rooms, TV Rooms, food shops, modern kitchens, washing machines, dryers, irons and ironing boards. There are also automatic dispenser machines that provide hot drinks like tea and coffee, biscuit/crackers and various beverages.
METU also has a limited number of student apartments. The international office at METU will attempt to place all exchange participants in campus housing. University housing is typically a shared apartment with a private bedroom and communal kitchen, living area, etc. If the university is unable to provide a permanent residence they will house students on campus temporarily while other, private accommodations are found.
Since this program is a University Exchange program you will pay OU tuition/fees and insurance to the OU Bursar and housing/meals/living expenses to Middle East Technical University.
